CANAL ZONE HORSEMEN'S ASSOCIATION
Fort Clayton
Clayton Riding Club was the largest facility in the Isthmus. Like Howard, Clayton was built within the walls of an old warehouse. The main barn had stalls all along the vast outer walls, maybe 25 large stall/tack room suites. Four to six stall modules filled the inner area adding another 25 stalls or so. The inner area had room to drive a vehicle in around the stalls. The loading bay area of the warehouse served as the refreshment area, restrooms, phone, office, dressing rooms and storage. All one long side of the main barn was the huge arena. On the far end was the roudn pen ana a warm up area- all fenced with steel posts and cables.
Soild sand ensured good footing and excellent drainage. An ovehang shelterd the announcer and audience. Across from the entrance of the main barn was one of the 3 additional smaller barns. Two rows of about 5 stalls/tack suites under a roof with two large turnout areas. Eventually an additional storage building was built adjacent to this barn.
Crossing a small bridge over a creek lead to the other two outdoor barns. One paralleled the dreek and had 5 or 6 stall/tack suiotes opeing onto individual paddocks. They faced a large pasture with huge trees all around the barn and field. To the left was a smallbarn with another 5 suites.
Across from the loading bay was the large hunt course. It was the first permanent hunt course with a huge water complex. A 20x40' rectangle which sloped to about 18" deep with logs on 3 sides. It took several firetrucks to fill.
These amenities and more have ensured Clayton is still supporting first class riding in Panama to this day.
